The Songs of the Rotating Door are Reliably Devoid of Emotional Depth, but Abundant in Light Hearted Fun and Luxury Consumption. Singers in the Rotating Door are alWays presented as if they have Access to Large Sums of Money and are Sxually Desirable : the Intention is for the Audience to be so Taken in by this Material Luxury and Sxual Desirability they emulate the Singers in their Behaviors. But, because of their enForced Lack of Personal and Artistic Authenticity (the Singers do not write their Own Music, and their Lives are run by their Handlers), the Musicians in the Rotating Door tend to burn out Early, to be replaced with New Musicians who are Fresh and Young and a Little Closer to the Zeitgeist (also, because it is Best to install Identities and Ideologies Young, if they are to stick, Much Rotating Door Music is directed at Teens and preTeens).

What happens when a Record Label decides an Indie or Acceptable UnUsual Artist is Popular Enough or has the “Right Stuff” to become More Famous and, thereby, earn them More Money? She becomes a Crossover Star! This alMost alWays ends Badly for her. The Indie / Acceptable UnUsual Artist is Either Completely absorbed into Commercial Pop and looses Every Thing that Once made her a Unique Musician, or, the Artistic Authenticity that got her Attention threatened by a Move up the Chain, Popularity, Xposure, and the Corresponding Increase in Demands on her Time and Energy causes her to Self Destruct (Usually with Drugs). Lana Del Rey is a Case in Point. Lizzie Grant aka Lana Del Rey is a Beautiful and Disturbing Album whose Brilliance lies in its Lyrical Details – the Wedding Ring in ‘Brite Lights,’ ‘Yayo’s Haunting Chorus, the Casinos on Indian Reservations in ‘Queen of the Gas Station,’ etc. – it’s Tragic Nostalgia with a Frank, Submissive / Oedipal Sxuality. Born to Die, on the Other Hand, is a Mess. ‘Born to Die,’ ‘Video Games,’ ‘Blue Jeans,’ ‘Diet Mountain Dew,’ and ‘Summertime Sadness,’ showcase Some of Lana Del Rey’s Talent for Evocation, but the Rest of the Album is as Bad as those Songs are Pretty Good. The over All Effect is Mainstream Pop Crap, inDistinguishable from what is being put out by the More Established Singers of the Rotating Door. Lana Del Rey fell for the Popularity Trap, put her Trust in (unDoubtably Male) Producers who said they could make her a Star (just like she suggested she would in LG aka LDR!) and lost (just like she suggested she would in LG aka LDR!) : the Self Awareness that made LG aka LDR so Fucking Good gets smothered on Most of the Tracks, to be replaced by Cheesy, Faddish References to Consumerism. There is Still Hope, though : Lana Del Rey could pull back from her Fame, she could write her Whole Nxt Album her Self, and we could have a More Talented Artist. Here's to Hope, eh?

The Indie Artist is, how Ever, still tied to the Machine of Capitalism that controls the Music Industry. Indie Music is defined by a Certain Flatness of Tone and Subject Matter; Indie Artists are promoted by Record Labels over Accpetable UnUsuals and OutSider Geniuses because their Music is inOffensive, and therefore, Easy to market. Indie Music promotes Political Complacency. Indie Musicians are Notable for how non-Threatening they are. In Indie Music, the Predominating Feminine ArcheType is the “Gamine,” the Soft, Wistful, Fragile, aSxual, Romantic Singer Song Writer. The Gamine Indie Starlet’s Music concerns its Self Primarily with Romance, the Emotions, and the Day to Day. If her Work does showcase a Politiks, these are Liberal or Socialist and Sentimental. Indie Artists are profiled in Publications Such as Exclaim, Spin, and Pitchfork, who write Virtually Identical Sounding Articles about these Virtually Identical Sounding Artists. Often, their Work is More Popular in Foreign Countries than in their Home Country. Some are Only appreciated postHumously. Often, OutSider Geniuses live Lives of Material Poverty. Their Songs are Rich in Pain and Transcendence, and as of Such, they are Difficult for Some People to listen to. Kathleen Yearwood, of Alberta, is One Such Artist. I had the Pleasure of meeting her and hearing her play thanks to a Fellow OutSider Musician, my Partner, jody franklin. I would describe her Sound as Searing, or Harrowing. It is an Emotional and Psychic Cleansing. The Subject Matter, Such as the Loss of a Brother, is Profound and Personal in a Way that is not found in Any of the Other Categories of Music I have described here. Often, OutSider Geniuses do not seek Attention, Often, they avoid it, but, in their Art, they command it. Their Works are glimpses into Other Dimensions, the Purity and Skill of their Craft Instantly conveying Vast Landscapes or Spectacular Moments of the Spirit. They reveal the World as it is, in All its Majik and Volatility. OutSider Art is Sublime. It cannot be contained.

it's bloody hard to talk about music at all- but I think your industry categories are pretty spot-on.
It's a sad place when everyone is clamouring to sell out, a dumping ground for those too corrupt or stupid for every other business, even drugs.
I chuckled.
I like the Kathleen Yearwood video. I like that she tells the yappers to shut it. Good, no, GREAT guitar sound.
