To Day, I will be focusing on Andrea Coates' Fictional Work, Specifically her First Novel, the One she hasn't finished yet but promotes on her Blog like she has, the One she’s so Certain will make her Famous, S.i/S: Splendid in/Sanity, or, S.i/S: as she likes to call it, because she thinks Acronyms are Cool, or Hip, as if Literature were a'Kin to Rap Music.

I read Early Drafts of S.i/S: back when it was called A Kind of Madness and Parts of it were on this Web Site and I can tell you, if it does get Famous ( which it shouldn’t, because it’s Dribble ) it will be for All the WRONG REASONS.

Andrea Coates thinks a S.i/S: is this Great Work of Millennial Literature, a Classic of " GirlKore," that S.i/S: will get Attention because Andrea Coates is the First Person of her Generation to write a Coming of Age Novel of Such Depth and Magnitude, and about a Girl. " The Kind of Grandiose semi Autobiograpical Work so Relevant to 20th Century American Fiction and to Men, and yet, in Canada and by Ladies, More Often passed over in favor of Miniaturist Studies of Middle Class Catharsis, " said Coates. While it is True that Most Canadian Novels are told in a Minor Key, and that Tales of Boys by Men dominate the English BuildungsRomans for Adults, Coates' S.i/S: is not the Great Vision of Canadian / Feminine / Millennial Identity she thinks it is, but a Pantheon to Every Thing Coates claims, in the Book and on her Blog, to be against

1) Vapid Hedonism

Andrea Coates claims to be an Author inTerested in the Moral Questions of her Day, but these seem to Centre, in Hap'e Blue's Mind at Least, around Sx, Drugs and Anarky. As a Result, S.i/S:, rather than a Careful Study of Moral Failings is a Hedonistic Novel concerned Largely with Self Pleasuring. While Coates may defend the Rampant Sx and Drug Use in S.i/S: as " a Form of Spiritualism to be left to the inDividual to Direct in their Freedom ~ Anarky, " what I get from All the drinking / toking / popping / snorting / fucking that takes Place in S.i/S: is that Hap'e Blue, Coates' " Alter Ego, " is More concerned with enJoyment of Life than Any Other Social Cause. Which makes her an Anarkist, I guess, but in the Negative Sense we Anarchists as Community Builders are trying to dispel. People will call S.i/S: a Great Novel like they defend the Works of Henry Miller - not because it raises them to " New Heights of Understanding of Nature, " as Coates has said, but because it allows them to justify their Self Gratifications.

2) Nationalism

Andrea Coates calls her Self an Anarchist and yet she has created a Book that she her Self claims, " cultivates Canadian Identity and improves Canadian Pride. " What is Andrea Coates trying to say here? I think that in the End, Coates, in her Self Promotion, cares More about Fame and Sales in Canada than she does about dismantling Colonial Privilege and that, though she claims to, Andrea Coates doesn't Really question the Validity of Jingoism based in an our Storically Ignorant and Racist Authoritarianism.

3) Capitalism

Andrea Coates says she is opposed to Mass Production, Consumerism, Commodification and Capitalist Economics as a Primary Social Governor, yet she talks about S.i/S: as if it is going to be an interNational Best Seller that makes a Million Dollars or More. If Andrea Coates is Really so Concerned about Small Scale Regional Production and the Evils of " XS Wealth ", why she doesn’t she Self publish her Novel? Why doesn't she give it away for Free on the InterNet? Why does she buy Food from Grocery Stores and writing Novel, when she could be joining the Occupy Movement, or working on a Farm for Self Sustainment? Why doesn't Andrea Coates live off the Grid, growing her own Food or Dumpster Diving? The Truth is Coates' Concern for Grandeur of Reputation and Life Style is Greater than her Concern for the Eradication of Ecologically Harmful Capitalist Consumer Habits.

4) Sxism

Andrea Coates says S.i/S: features a Feminist Protagonist, and yet the Most Emotional Parts of the Book are the Parts when Hap'e Blue almost gets married and Hap'e Blue realizes Motherhood is the Deepest Realm of her being. Not Only is Hap'e Blue obsessed with her Traditional Roles as Wife and Mother, she spends al'Most All the Book socializing with Men. The Womyn Friends Hap'e Blue does make, she looses in pursuit of Men. If Hap'e Blue had Numerous Lady Friends, was Inept with Men, or was a Lesbian, or if S.i/S: was about her Platonic Relationship with a Womyn, like Sheila Heti’s How Should a Person Be?, I would take this Book More Seriously as a Feminist Tract. As it is, it reeks of 3rd Wave Spice Girls " Sxe Feminism, " a Self Serving Patriarchal Trick played on Millennial Feminists by the Creators of Media that has convinced them they can meet Masculine Beauty and Personality Standards while remaining Free and Powerful Lady, which is a Contradiction.

5) Atheism

Andrea Coates says that she is a Pagan and that she does her Best to honor and do Good by the Universe, and yet the Hap'e Blue of S.i/S: is an Atheist with Little or no Regard for the Spiritual World beyond the Vague imPressions of it she gets of it from the Psychedelic Drugs she takes in XS. Even then, Hap'e Blue's Opinions remain in Line with Materialism. Sober for the First Time in Years, Hap'e Blue begins to look into the Xistence a Force Greater than her Self, but then she rejects it and spends the Rest of the Book alternating between Condescending and Confused when People mention Spiritual Matters to her. Hap'e Blue comes off Much More concerned with Sx, inToxication and Adventure than with the meta Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Truths of our Species and the Planet we live on, which brings me to,

6) Environmental Destruction

Andrea Coates calls her Self an Enviro Mentalist, yet there is no in Dication that Hap'e Blue is at all concerned with the Health and Survival of the Planet on which we All live. In S.i/S: Hap'e Blue is Totally pre Occupied with her Life and Pleasure. Hap'e Blue takes Air Planes and owns Xtravagant Clothing. She spends no Time at All honoring or reflecting on the Role of Nature in her Life beyond how having Ovaries impedes her from behaving " Rationally. " The Chapters on Tree Planting, Typically, spends More Time describing the Men and Parties than the Natural World that surrounds these Hedonistic Activities. The Tree Planting Industry, by the Way, was created to maintain Logging Companies, not Old Growth Forests.

7) Selfishness

Andrea Coates has said, " I wrote S.i/S: for the People of the Land I was born on and beyond, so that we could All come understand our Selves Better and be Kinder in the Future, " but I think the Only True Thing Andrea Coates has ever said about her Self or her Work is that she has " One of the Biggest Egos on the InterNet ". S.i/S: is no Thing but a Vehicle for Coates' Self Promotion. Rather than featuring Multiple Protagonists from Multiple Walks of Life, as the Sociological Novel should, the Well Educated Hap'e Blue's Adventures dominate S.i/S:.


From this and Earlier Points, I have concluded that Spelndid in/Sanity xists for no Reason but to tell the Story and enrich the Life of the Privileged Andrea Coates her Self.

I believe it is Clear from this Essay than Andrea Coates is a Fake, spouting off on Ethical Issues to attract Attention to her Self, sell her Work, get Rich, and move Some where she doesn’t have to think about these Issues Any More ( " HRTNRKFRM " is a Cover Term for Coates' Mega Mansion ).



Can we tolerate this Flagrant Hypocrisy in a Literary Icon?
